Chattogram Port, also known as Chittagong Port, is the premier seaport of Bangladesh, located in the city of Chittagong. It is the busiest and most important seaport in the country, handling more than 85% of Bangladesh’s international trade.

The port has a long history dating back to the 16th century, when it was a major trading hub for the Mughal Empire. It has since undergone numerous renovations and expansions to meet the growing demands of international trade.

The port is operated by the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation and the Chittagong Port Authority, which are responsible for the management and development of the port. The port has a number of facilities, including a container terminal, a roll-on/roll-off terminal, a general cargo terminal, and a liquid terminal.

One of the major challenges facing the Chattogram Port is its limited capacity. The port is often congested, leading to delays in the movement of cargo and ships. To address this issue, the government of Bangladesh has undertaken a number of expansion and modernization projects in recent years.

One such project is the construction of a new deep sea port at Matarbari, which is expected to alleviate the pressure on the Chattogram Port. The Matarbari port will be able to accommodate larger vessels and will have a capacity of handling 20 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year.

Another ongoing project is the expansion of the container terminal at the Chattogram Port. The expansion will increase the terminal’s capacity to handle 1.5 million TEUs per year, up from the current capacity of 1 million TEUs.

In addition to these expansion projects, the government is also working on improving the efficiency of the port by investing in modern equipment and technology. This includes the installation of a new information system for the management of cargo and ships, as well as the implementation of an electronic cargo tracking system.

Despite these efforts, the Chattogram Port still faces a number of challenges. One of the major challenges is the lack of reliable transportation infrastructure, which makes it difficult to move cargo from the port to other parts of the country. There are also issues with corruption and red tape, which can lead to delays in the clearance of cargo.

Another challenge is the limited number of berths at the port, which often leads to delays in the turnaround of ships. The port also lacks a dedicated container terminal for handling transshipment cargo, which could potentially limit its competitiveness in the region.

Despite these challenges, the Chattogram Port remains a vital part of the economy of Bangladesh, and the government is committed to improving its infrastructure and efficiency. The expansion and modernization projects currently underway are expected to help the port better meet the growing demands of international trade and make it more competitive in the region.
